The Ultimate Couples Vacation
Published in March - May 2008 edition of Cabo Noche magazine
By Olaf Petersen on Sunday March 16, 2008Desire Resort & Spa Los Cabos has an ambiance that reflects its kinship with Desire Maya. But it has a character all its own –as benefits its location. Situated right on the beach at Cabo San Lucas it overlooks the Sea of Cortez. But the action’s all inside the resort.
Desire’s management has taken an existing hotel and beautifully refurbished it with first class fixtures and fittings. The place looks smart and well maintained. The desert themed gardens are beautiful. The pool is large and immaculate. The restaurants are professionally decorated and managed. Our room was spotless and comfortable, with a huge bed, adequate storage (it’s surprising how much clothing one can need at a clothing optional resort!) The mini-fridge was constantly filled, and security was never an issue. We are not new to adult, clothing optional resorts. We are not new to Desire, but our first visit to Los Cabos was no disappointment. It was everything we wanted in an adult vacation.
A DAY IN THE LIFE.
A good day starts with a good breakfast. For us, that was the generous buffet. For others it was a call to 24-hour room service. Apart from the egg/omelet bar (design your own), there were hot and cold breakfast items to appeal to Europeans and North Americans, with cheeses, cold cuts, fruit, breads and pastries, and Mexican items. This all came with rich Mexican-grown coffee, juices, Champagne, and tea.
Morning activity begins with finding just the right mix of sun and shade around the pool. Large, shaded, loungers, beds and chairs accommodated us. Organized activities started slowly with stretching and aerobics, beach volleyball, or simply a visit to the swim-up bar. The less active received their morning bar orders from the constantly attentive bar servers.
Lunch stretched into late afternoon, with hot and cold items from the dining room right by the pool. While guests were usually nude or minimally dressed around the pool, decorum requires a degree of cover-up while dining.
Afternoon pool activities usually involved some sort of silly game, or water volleyball—or simply more visits to the swim-up bar. While the beach is inviting and deserted, the Black warning flag kept us out of the ocean. A strenuous walk beside the surf was great exercise.
By late afternoon, the rooftop hot tub was the main attraction. A well managed bar, a casual ambiance, and loads of space to catch the last rays of sun made the tub the place to socialize.
There are three restaurants at Desire Los Cabos, all of which competed for our attention, with varied menus and good service. It was fun to eat with a group or as a couple. Some very good wines matched the food. Service was unrushed yet professional—and the wine mellowed us.
After dinner, a trip to the bar in the middle of the garden was an option. Some evenings we enjoyed professional entertainment, other nights we took part in Karaoke or unwound in conversations with new friends.
By late evening, it was disco time. Nightly themes encouraged us to adopt a new persona, shed a few years, and dance like a kid again. As the evening wore to a close, a quick trip back to the hot tub often turned into a long, relaxing and wonderfully sensuous wrap-up to another magnificent day.
WHO’S THERE?
The guests were predominantly Americans from the West. There were some of us from Canada, or the East of the continent, with a few Europeans and Mexicans. Ages ranged from almost thirty, averaging mid 30’s to 40’s and even a couple or two who were approaching seventy. Interestingly, we found that most had never visited an adults-only or a clothing optional resort before. A few had vacationed at other well-known adult-oriented resorts in Florida, Jamaica and Mexico. Desire was a learning experience for many during our trip.
Spending the day (and sometimes the evening) minimally dressed tends to bare one to new feelings. Without exception, everyone we met loved the experience, and found social nudity quite acceptable. One thing that has always resonated with us has been the smiles we see when on vacation at an adult resort. This happiness was immediately apparent at Desire Los Cabos too. The new sensations, the warmth, good food, fine wines … make for a sensuous and joyous ambiance. Most couples became totally focused on their respective partners. But isn’t that what a great couples vacation should be about? It is for us. Desire Los Cabos fits the bill and we look forward to revisiting.
