MONEY
Most businesses take US dollars, but you may get pesos back for change. Though this is not the “exact” rate of exchange, most businesses in Los Cabos use the basic 10 to 1 ratio:
PAPER BILLS:
$50 Pesos = $5 US
$100 Pesos = $10 US
$200 Pesos = $20 US
$500 Pesos = $50 US
COINS:
$1 Peso = 10¢ US
$2 Pesos = 20¢ US
$5 Pesos = 50¢ US
$10 Pesos = $1 US
For the official exchange rate or to exchange currency, visit any Mexican bank. Most Mexican banks have cash machines and most are valid for the withdrawal of pesos only (with an American or Canadian ATM or credit card).
PHONES
Call your local cell phone provider to assure that your cell is programmed for use or service within the country of Mexico. When calling the U.S. or Canada from your cell phone, dial 001 + the area code and phone number. If calling a Mexico “cell” phone from a “land-line”, you must dial 044 + the area code (usually 624 in Cabo) and the 7-digit phone number.
Calling the USA or Canada from a landline in Mexico can be costly. However, many local businesses offer free or inexpensive calls to the U.S., Canada and beyond. Several restaurants in Plaza Puerto Paraiso (in San Lucas) offer these services.
CULTURE & “MAS”
Many locals speak English, but remember, Los Cabos is in “Mexico”... so be patient, not all locals speak fluent English.
Ask restaurants if they accept credit cards before you sit down... not all do. When you are done eating, you will need to ask for the check, by saying “La cuenta por favor.” In Mexico, it is considered rude to deliver the check before you ask for it. Gratuities are up to you. However bare in mind that tips are a large portion of a local’s (working in the service industry) income. When leaving a tip, 15% to 20% is the norm. Gratuities are sometimes added to the total, so be sure to check the bill.
THE LEGAL DRINKING AGE IS 18.
WEATHER
Cabo gets 300 to 350 days of sunshine, with a climate somewhat comparable to Palm Springs, California, but surrounded by two oceans. In the winter months, Cabo averages mid to upper 70's during the day.
There are more than 850 species of marine life in Los Cabos, and Land’s End is also the “Marlin Capital of the World!” And "The Aquarium of the World” is what Jacques Cousteau said about Cabo Pulmo, located about 40 miles north of San José del Cabo on the eastern cape of Baja.
